Treasure Hunt

The map they discovered had them lost. Was it authentic or was this a hoax? Two curious boys on a hot summer day with nothing better to do were about to find out. Noah wrecked his bike on the last switchback, so they agreed to walk the rest of the way. Brambles and thorns scratched their faces, gnats and mosquitoes buzzed in their ears…hadn’t they been this way once before? The sun beat down and their lack of preparation left them feeling hungry and dizzy. As night began to fall, they admit failure and await their rescue. NYC Midnight microfiction submission

Eileen- thanks for sharing this brief yet very enjoyable piece! You manage to tell a colorful, all-too-relatable story with few words and that is something I find very impressive. Well done!

Remembering Martha

I met Martha when I started working at the Croghan Library in November of 2013. Many of the people knew that I was simply the person hired to replace the director who was retiring. Often times I was asked what my name was… which meant what my LAST name was so these curious minds could find out who I was related to in the county. When Martha asked me that question, I responded with giving her my last name which she quickly dismissed not caring who I was related to, but wanting to know who I was. That made me feel seen. It made me feel welcomed as I recalled being drilled about my name when I attended a new church in the county. My husband calls these Lewis County conversations.

Eileen- This was such a touching tribute to a wonderful person. I was blessed to call Martha my great aunt for almost twenty-four years and reading this made me smile in remembrance of the woman I'd known so well. She was certainly a beautiful soul and brought joy to many people in her lifetime. She will continue to bring joy to all of us who knew and loved her through her memory! Beautifully written.

In Memory of…

Eileen Mathys of Castorland passed away at home surrounded by her family.

She arrived earlier than expected on the morning of December 27th, 1974 in Potsdam, NY. She spent most of her life in NNY with some brief years living in Michigan and Arizona. She was not one to travel, but visited the world through her books as she was a lifelong reader. Mrs Mathys was a graduate of Watertown High School and later JCC.

Eileen enjoyed spending her free time cooking, baking, and crafting. She was often seen running the roads with her husband who was her constant partner, that she dubbed her coach. Eileen was rarely seen without a book in her hand. She found her dream job late in life and served as the Croghan Librarian for several years.

Eileen is survived by her husband Scott, whom she dubs the love of her life, daughter…

Eileen, I very much enjoyed reading this. Very well written and love how it makes the reader think about the fleeting nature of life as well as the unique beauty of each life and how it is lived. Truly thought-provoking!
